London’s most exciting radio station, Radar Radio, celebrates its third birthday with a trio of events across October and November, representing three different sides of the station’s musical output.
More than any other station, Radar has been vital to the rise of UK street music in recent years - providing a physical space and countless shows dedicated to the best new grime, afro-swing/bashment, drill, dancehall and more. The third, final and biggest of Radar’s three birthday events is a celebration of this generation of UK music - a takeover of East London’s Mangle E8 that will showcase the key artists and DJs pushing this movement forward.
Fresh from his sold-out debut headline show and with a succession of anthems under his belt, Suspect has quickly become one of the UK’s most hyped new talents - his set is NOT to be missed. Also performing is one of the country’s fastest-rising dancehall artists in Lisa Mercedez, and Kenny Allstar, P Montana and Sir DJ Corey - three of the key DJs in their respective fields, with ears for talent and connections that have elevated them far beyond the competition. All have become a key part of the Radar family, and anyone who’s seen them live will know to expect some serious special guests (recent Radar parties have seen unannounced performances by 67, Hardy Caprio, Abra Cadabra and D Double E). Joining them, eight of Radar’s very finest residents in Amy Becker, BBC AZN Network (a.k.a. Manara, 2Shin & Sweyn Jupiter), Jossy Mitsu, Jetsss and recent Hyperdub signing Proc Fiskal.
On October 26, Radar will take over Pickle Factory for a showcase of the station’s experimental specialist programming. Headlining is a rare UK performance by DJ Lag, the key figure in South Africa’s Gqom movement - a form of dark dance music hailing from the country’s townships that is attracting fans across the globe. Blackest Ever Black’s Raime will be performing as their more dance-focused Yally alias, while Hyperdub’s Endgame, Syymstress, Uniti and Absolute Zero - one of Radar’s key show for all things upcoming and experimental - completes the line-up.
On October 31, Radar makes its first appearance at intimate London club East Bloc for a free entry, RSVP-only showcase of Radar DJs, friends and family. Ikonika b2b Scratcha DVA, Tash LC b2b Moleskin, Bok Bok b2b Girl Unit, Wallwork b2b TSVI, CWD, Snoochie Shy, Cotch and Mungo will soundtrack the first of many Radar shows at East Bloc. The station will be launching a weekly residency at the club at the end of 2017, filling a space in London’s clubbing circuit that’s been notable since the closure of iconic weekly parties like FWD and YoYo.
Together, these three events showcase the breadth and bravery with which Radar have approached radio programming and the station’s constant support for new talent in the UK and beyond - a celebration of the last three years and a taste of what’s to come.
