Two-time MOBO Award winner SHAKKA commenced a stellar new chapter in his career when he released ‘Heart The Weekend’ late last year. Praised by Wiley, the track earned radio support from Radio 1 (Huw Stephens), 1Xtra (MistaJam, Twin B, A. Dot, Charlie Sloth, Yasmin Evans), Beats 1 (Julie Adenuga) and Kiss Fresh.
His subsequent performances included a packed homecoming show at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire which featured guests Wretch 32 and Ghetts, and a killer session for Colors.
Inspired by Craig David and Usher, SHAKKA’s latest track ‘Man Down’ blends his defiantly British take on R&B with another towering crossover pop hook. AlunaGeorge complements Shakka’s powerful delivery with feminine vocal harmonies, while his old friend Jae5 (J Hus) collaborated on the production.
Lyrically it’s a song inspired by SHAKKA’s own experiences. He says, “The free time that I have has always been minimal, but I still fall in love with women. So there have been times where I want to spend time with someone I’ve fallen in love with but can’t. It’s about understanding that compatibility is so important, and that you have to work hard to find your true love.”
In addition to the release of ‘Heart The Weekend’, last year saw Wyclef Jean herald SHAKKA as a new star when they met at MIDEM, and SHAKKA was also invited by Roc Nation to join a songwriting camp. He also featured on Fekky’s ‘My Size’ and Young Thug & Carnage’s ‘Don’t Call Me’, and produced and featured on the Not3s track ‘No Drama’ from his latest EP ‘Take Not3s’.
