NEW MUSIC: Greentea Peng
The last few years have been nothing but eventful for the south-east London artist. From playing beach bars in Mexico, to supporting Neneh Cherry and collaborating with The Streets, Greentea Peng starts 2021 with a nomination for the “BBC sounds of 2021” list (previous nominees were Adele, Dizzee Rascal, Jessie J & Billie Eilish)
Self described as “psychedelic RnB” her new single “Spells” manages to capture that sound just perfectly. In this song about relationships and acceptance of one-self, Greentea manages to flawlessly mix elements of new-soul (her voice a fantastic in-between of Erykah Badu and Amy Winehouse) over a beautifully atmospheric afrobeat instrumental.
With her new album due out in 2021, the artist is staying grounded and true to herself, as shown in a recent interview:
”Never seek gratification from recognition, do what you're doing because you love to do it, and because there's a higher intention behind it. If there's one person that's heard that song and connected with it, that's a prize.”
If the rest of the album is as strong as what we can listen to in “Spells” it won’t be surprising if many music fans end up finding that connection.
