#NEWMUSIC | Morgan Munroe - Layers (EP)
Someone we supported heavily last year drops her debut EP ‘Layers‘. The soulful Morgan Munroe has been impressing over the past 12 months with live performance across the country including iluvlive’s in Birmingham, London and Manchester. After cutting her teeth on the live circuit she drops a five track EP which sits somewhere in between Sampha, James Blake, Erykah Badu and Jamie Woon.
The project show cases Morgan’s stella vocal ability and intricate song writing with her able to ride tracks with the modern cadence made popular by acts such a Drake to delivering a powerful traditionally sang ballad. With Solange’s new album dividing opinion with it’s avant garde foundation’s, Morgan shows hints of a similar artistic approach without losing the listener.
As the title of the EP suggests, ‘Layers’ has 5 songs with their own identity and character. ‘Mama Taught Me’ the lead single which dropped late last year emerges R&B with electronic bounce effortlessly and ‘Who The F@#*’ is trap R&B at it’s braggadocios best. The bounce on ‘Take Me Home’ is infectious and Morgan rides it with the confidence and swag that is reflected lyrically. ‘Lost And Found’ is a more traditional singer / songwriter ballad. And when you think, wow so many vibes on here, she goes all James Blake on ‘You Get Me’. I guess what I’m trying to say is if you have an open mind to soul / R&B, this will be on rotation for a while in your household, whip or on your commute.
